What is a Keyword Research Tool? One of the things that I have noticed out there, is that no one really explains what a keyword research tool is, or what information a keyword research tool provides you.
They just try to sell you the keyword research tool they believe is the best, without explaining your question.
So, I want to make sure you fully understand what a keyword is, what a keyword research tool is, why it is such an important part of your online business and also how to complete keyword research too.
Let’s start with clarifying your understand of what a keyword or keyword phrase is.
What is a Keyword or Keyword Phrase?
We use keywords or keyword phrases every time we write a search term into Google, Bing, Yahoo or YouTube. It is how the search engines are able to understand what we are looking for help with and what results to show you.
Imagine typing into Google, what is a keyword research tool and they display information about SEO techniques. Whilst they are related, it isn’t what you were originally looking.
So, keywords are used by:
Visitors to a search engine looking for help with something
Search Engines to provide search results
Online Business Owners to make sure their content is highly relevant for the search engines to display at the top of the search results
To be able to ensure you are able to target effective keywords, you need a keyword research tool.
What is a Keyword Research Tool?
Now, if you just pick a common or broad keyword and write content that is not an effective strategy.
There are billions of search results that come up and if you don’t understand how to research the best keywords to target to get your new website ranking, then you will find it extremely difficult to get anywhere with your content.
High-quality content is important, but if you do not complete any keyword research you will find it like walking through a darkened room trying to find the light switch.
A Keyword Research tool allows you to check out keywords and find effective low competition keywords to target with your content. It connects with the search engines to ensure you get the results you need and help you target effective keywords to add content about.
Rather than targeting a highly competitive keyword that has already been covered off effectively by authority websites, it allows a new website owner to target a low competition keyword or what we like to call the low-hanging-fruit keyword.
Low Hanging Fruit Keyword Strategy
A new website will take time to get ranked into the search engines, and if you don’t target low hanging fruit keywords you will find it will be harder to rank and get noticed.
A Keyword Research Tool provides you with information around any keyword you are trying to target and can even give you a much better option to target.
An authority website that has been around for a while will have the options of many keywords to target, but a new website owner will definitely benefit from targeting a low-hanging-fruit keyword.
A Low-Hanging-Fruit keyword is a keyword that receives some traffic on a monthly basis, but more importantly only has a few competing posts for the same keyword.
The ideal low-hanging-fruit keyword to target for a new website is typically above 100 monthly searches and less than 100 QSR (competing sites). But the lower the QSR score the better.
There is no point targeting a keyword that receives thousands of monthly searches but has over 200 competing websites if you are just starting out.
Starting out is tough enough without having to compete with authority websites.
But a keyword research tool might show you a different keyword, maybe a longer variant of the same keyword that might only receive 200 monthly searches but has only 20 competing websites.
If you can rank your post at the top of the search results, I would much rather have 200 monthly clicks than none at all from the more competitive keyword, that is how you build up to getting your authority and then you can start competing with the big boys on more competitive keywords.
Why a Keyword Research Tool is so Important to Your Business!
That is why a keyword research tool is so important to your business. Targeting low competition keywords that have some monthly traffic on a new blog will definitely lead to more traffic than a new blog trying to compete with just any old keyword.
What a Keyword Research Tool Shows You…
Below is a screenshot of what information you will see using a keyword research tool. We are using our preferred keyword research tool, Jaaxy but you will find the information similar to what you will see elsewhere.
Let’s explain the different headings and the results that they provide you:
AVG: The average number of searches this keyword receives a month
Traffic: Visits to your website if you achieve first page rankings in the search engines
QSR: (Quoted Search Results) – The number of competing websites ranked in Google for this exact keyword
KQI: (Keyword Quality Indicator) – The quality of the keyword, Green is Great, Yellow is OK, Red is Poor
SEO: A score based on traffic and competition, the higher the score, the more likely you will rank for the keyword. Score is out of 100, the higher the better.
These are some great metrics letting you know which keywords to target, and it also will give you more keywords to target later on.
Domain: It will also let you know if that domain is available for you to buy.
Using the Keyword Research Tool
With Jaaxy, the keyword research tool is really easy to use. Just type the keyword you are wanting to write an article about, and it will give you the details for that specific keyword, but it will also give you a number of relevant keywords too.
There are alternative keyword research tools out there, but to be honest they all seem to be a little more complicated to use and understand.
That is why we like Jaaxy, it is a powerful tool that is really easy to use and understand. It also provides a few other tools within it that can help you with your website and content creation too.
From the screenshot above, you can see that “What is a Keyword” is really competitive and would be tough for a beginner to rank for, but if we chose “What is a Keyword Phrase” that is a better option.
Ok, it only has an average of 96 searches a month, but it only has 24 competing sites and I bet with the right training you could easily rank well for that. You goal is to be on page one of the search engines, write a better post than the ones already there and you could find yourself being number one soon.
Think about it, how often have you gone to page 2 of Google to find what you are looking for? 96 clicks is better than none, like I said.
What is the Best Keyword Research Tool for Beginners?
We think that Jaaxy is a great keyword research tool for beginners. The main reason being that it is so easy to use and understand.
With a great traffic light system for whether to use a keyword or not and some other great tools that we will go into detail in within our Jaaxy review, it is a great simple tool that is a great companion for your online business.
Jaaxy provides you with a number of features to help you with not only your keyword research, but also allows you to research your niche a little more in detail.
We also love the affiliate program tool to see affiliate programs you can use within your niche too.
Here is a short guide on what the tools are that Jaaxy provides.
Once you start ranking your content, this is a great tool to keep an eye on how your rankings are going. Are you blog posts going up, are they are the top of the search results or are they dropping meaning you need to do something about it…?
You can also tag posts to keep an eye on your rankings within the dashboard too.
This is a great tool to analyse your competition, who is also competing for the same keywords you are targeting. Then you can review their content to ensure you right a better version.
You can also discover some SEO trends using this tool too.
Alphabet Soup Technique
Have you ever noticed that when you start typing a keyword into Google it starts prompting what your question might be? This is called Google Instant and it changes as you change the letter. So, as you type a term and then add a, b c, etc. it changes the result.
This can open up tons of different search terms for you to start keyword research on. But doing it through google takes time, this tool does all the work for you. Just type your chosen keyword into the box and see all of the different results that come up from the alphabet for you to analyse.
(This is my favourite tool within Jaaxy).
Find out what is trending online, what is popular and stay up-to-date within your niche with this great little feature

Whenever you start looking for information on keywords, you will get inundated with posts relating to keyword research. Now keyword research is important; but unless you know the fundamental basics of what a keyword is, there is no point in going into detail on keyword research.
In this post, I want to share with you some key information around keywords or keyword phrases. What they are, the importance of keywords and how to use them in your content.
When you first start looking into creating a blog, website or an online business we often think we don’t know what a keyword is. But you will be surprised to know that you are always using a keyword or phrase when you type anything into a search engine like Google.
It is the search term you are using to look for information or help with understanding a topic.
Another thing to know is that a keyword is not necessarily classed as a single word. If I typed into Google “what is a keyword or phrase?” into google that is a keyword. It looks like a phrase, but the important thing to know is that Google uses this term to show you the best results.
The more specific you are in your search, the more relevant your search results will be.
If you just typed, “Keywords”.
Google would do its best to show you results that are relevant to keywords. But it is doing a best guess, as they do not understand what you are trying to get out of that term. That is quite a broad term, whereas any of the below would give them a good idea on what you are trying to understand:
What is a Keyword?
What is Keyword Research?
How Do You Do Keyword Research?
What is the Best Keyword Research Tool?
Let’s get into the importance of keywords and how relevance is the main factor.
The Importance of Keywords
When people first start out with an online business and start doing keyword research, they often fall into the trap of
focusing on getting their content ranked higher up the search engines.
I’ll admit, it is important to get your blog at the top of the search engines.
But you need to remember a key thing. The people who find your blog, if the content is not relevant or helpful, they will leave your website.
That will harm your rankings more, as Google will see that people are not interacting with your blog.
Google compares your content against the keyword you are trying to rank for.
It is important to know that Google will actually look through all of your content, so whilst your target keyword might be “What is a Keyword or Phrase?” You might actually rank against other terms within your content too.
Now, if I had used that keyword in my title (as I have here), but all I did was try and sell you a keyword research tool when you are still trying to understand a keyword. That is not relevant and will make you steer away from my blog.
One of the best bits of advice I can give you around using keywords on your blog or website is to make sure it is helping someone. Helping people is more effective than trying to sell to people.
Keywords are so important, as they help the search engines understand what your content is about, that allows them to rank it against the other competing posts for that same keyword. If yours answers the question better and is from an authority website it will rank higher.
But it needs to also answer the relevant questions regarding that keyword for the people who are searching and ultimately choosing your blog to help them.
How Do You Use Keywords in You Content?
An old technique that is still shown as a method in some places talks about “keyword stuffing”. This is where you practically put the keyword anywhere and everywhere in your post and it would rank.
But naturally, this did not paint a good picture when the user came onto that page. They quickly came off the page as it was poorly written.
Google has done a lot of work on its crawling algorithms and now they actually read your content and keyword stuffing is no longer accepted practise.
My advice would be to include your target keyword in the following places:
Meta Description (this is the section that is displayed under your title in the search results)
Don’t worry if you include the keyword naturally throughout the post, as long as your content is relevant and helps explain the topic to someone who clicks on your post. That is the part that really matters.
But by putting them in the places above, you are telling Google what your content is about. If it is high-quality and helps someone who clicks on it and they find it useful, Google will notice this and possibly rank you better too.
Every piece of content on your blog or website will start with keyword research. Targeting a specific keyword and writing a helpful informative post for that keyword.
But another key factor in where Google ranks that content is user engagement. As your website grows and your authority grows, and you get more traffic. How that traffic engages with your content will also affect the rankings of your posts.
Your rankings could go up (if they really love your content and read it and interact with it) or they could go down (if they find the content is lacking in some areas).
Now you have a common grasp of what is a keyword or phrase, the natural next step is keyword research. I will touch on the basics here, but if you want a more definitive answer, please check out my What is Keyword Research in SEO post.
The Basics of Keyword Research
Without doing any keyword research, to be honest, your chosen keyword is useless. The reason is, you are walking blindly
with that strategy.
You need to know how many searches that keyword gets, how much traffic you can expect if you rank at the top of the search engines and how many other posts are competing for that keyword too.
Keyword research is a fundamental step in any online business owners route to creating strategy.
You might write a 4,000-word article that answers every single question in a specific topic and find that you get no traffic because it is up against an authority website, that gives you no chance as you stayed too broad in your keyword.
Low Hanging Fruit Keywords
One of the best strategies for a new or fairly new website is to target low-hanging-fruit keywords.
We have already covered off what a keyword or keyword phrase could be, but a low-hanging-fruit keyword is referring to a keyword that when you do keyword research, it has a small amount of traffic each month but more importantly, it has low competition.
Below is a screenshot, where I have searched for the term “What is a Keyword” in a keyword research tool:
That chosen keyword has tons of traffic, but there is a high number of competing websites for that same term.
What is a Keyword – It has an average of 35,516 search terms a month but 212 competing posts for that same term.
Now, if you were an established authority website you could probably compete and get high enough with that term.
But when starting out, that would be really hard to compete with.
Now, if you were to look at the keyword “What is a keyword phrase” – That does only have an average of 96 searches a month, but only 24 competing posts.
The Low-Hanging-Fruit technique is the way forward for a new website to build up traffic and authority. By consistently targeting these keywords, you can have the trickle effect.
Loads of posts, where they all receive some traffic. But the overall effect is your traffic levels are rising overall.
Once you have built up your authority in your niche, you can then start competing for more keywords.
Imagine 100 posts, all competing for low-hanging-fruit keywords and are competing well will get you a lot more traffic than 1000 posts targeting high competition keywords and getting nowhere.
One of the most fundamental basics of any online business will be keyword research. Without keyword research you will be walking blind and hoping for the best.
Whether you are targeting SEO or PPC Marketing you need a keyword research tool you can rely on to help you get started and still be relevant when you become an experience Internet Marketer. Let’s Explore the Jaaxy Tools
We will start with the keyword research tool, and with quick results and easy to understand metrics it will bring you closer to understanding which keywords to target.
Just targeting any keyword will not yield the types of results you really want, and sometimes the keyword we want to use is actually not that great either. Doing keyword research allows you to target the right keyword for the topic. If you are just starting out, the best strategy is the low hanging fruit keyword.
I have typed a search term into Jaaxy below to give us an example to play with. When we look at the results, you will see some headings and figures, let’s break those down.
Avg. (Monthly Searches) – The number of searches this keyword has on average per month across Google, Bing and Yahoo.
Traffic – the estimated number of clicks you could receive from being on the first page of Google
Quoted Search Results (QSR) – this is how many other posts/sites are ranking for that given keyword on Google. This is where Jaaxy is a step apart from others, as they use a state-of-the-art algorithm to produce precise keyword competition results. You would need to manually do this in Google, otherwise.
Keyword Quality Indicator (KQI) – How good is the keyword. Advice typically states the keyword must make sense. It uses a traffic light system to let you know if it is good to use. Green for great, yellow for ok and red is not advised.
SEO Power – Using a score between 0 and 100 this uses the previous results to give you a number based on how easy it would be to rank for. The higher the better. Aim for 90 or better.
Domain Search – Lets you know if a given keyword has availability to make it a domain.
We can use these metrics to target the right keyword research tool, from one screen. Even though just “affiliate marketing tools” is a good keyword, it has 182 competing posts for that same keyword. If you are experienced and know what you are doing you could easily target this and write a better post to get up top. But starting out, there are better options. To be honest, that is why my domain name is bestaffiliatemarketingtools.org as I had more chance of competing as this domain is still relatively new.
That is where I go back to the low-hanging-fruit analogy.
Low Hanging Fruit
If you keep targeting highly competitive keywords, you will struggle to get anywhere. But if you target keywords that might not get a lot of monthly searches or traffic, but you target a lot of them you will still gain traffic but from more sources. These types of keyword are typically called the low hanging fruit. 10 low hanging fruit keywords could actually get you more traffic than targeting one keyword that has loads of searches, but you don’t see any of it.
This is what using a keyword research tool like Jaaxy allows you to do.
Whenever you start searching in Google, they will give you suggestions. These are based on what other people are commonly searching for. It is called Google Instant and is a fantastic tool for marketers researching a niche. But it does take time. What Jaaxy’s alphabet soup feature does is do all the hard work for you and displays it on one page. In just a few seconds, you will see a whole list of ideas from that Google Instant feature.
From here you can search on any terms and get the metrics for that keyword, or you can brainstorm further on the concept.
Search Analysis (Competition)
This feature tells you who is ranking at the top of the search engines for a given niche/keyword. This will be your competition for that specific keyword. It is an important step when creating content to see who is ranking first for that keyword you are going to write an article for. If you can write a better article, you have a good chance of knocking them off top spot. (the prime location for marketers).
I typed in best affiliate marketing tools, this shows me who I am competing against for that keyword. Below is an example of the details of the post at the top.
This feature allows you to search for affiliate programs in your given niche. Quickly search for products on four affiliate program providers – Linkshare, Commission Junction, Digital River and Click Bank. I am going to use the example of pet products to show you the details:
Keep track of where your website is in the search engines (Google, Bing or Yahoo) for any keyword. Dependant on your plan will determine how far they search for your site. For example, the starter membership will only check if you are on page one. But the pro version will check down to 20 pages. You can also select to track a keyword and keep an eye on it, is it staying consistent or not. This is a useful feature once you start ranking well, you can then start to monitor your position
Quickly see what is trending on Google trends, Alexa Topics, Amazon Best Sellers & Twitter Trends. Keeping an eye on the latest news for ideas is important, Jaaxy combines it all easily into one page. You can also add items to a brainstorm queue.
The Jaaxy Affiliate Program
You can also earn commissions for promoting Jaaxy. Even someone using their free starter account will earn commissions.
