Is Total Life Changes A Scam? Can It Really Change Your Life?!

Cons

Summary:  Total Life Changes is a Health and Wellness MLM company. It has overpriced products that get mixed reviews online and is in a heavily saturated market.  The lack of income disclosure is a huge red flag that only confirms our suspicions that this will follow all typical MLM’s of distributors losing a lot of money and not being any closer to earning money with this business opportunity.

What is Total Life Changes?

Total Life Changes is a health and wellness MLM or Multi-Level Marketing company.  It was founded in 1999 by Jack Fallon, who we will get into more about in a moment.

Jack came up with the idea in 1994 and started TLC in 1999. Focusing on one product back then called the Nutriburst.  It has then grown to have generated over $88 million in revenue in 2006.

They currently operate in over 140 countries and they have over 49,000 distributors working for them.

You can learn a little more about how they got started in this short video:

Who’s Jack Fallon?

Jack Fallon is considered as an authority figure within Network Marketing (another name for MLM).

is total life changes a scam - Jack Fallon

He boasts an impressive number of followers on Instagram and Facebook, Jack is the founder and CEO of Total Life Changes.

He claims Total Life Changes is an MLM business opportunity that focuses on coaching others to help them achieve success within MLM.

Jack Fallon did a full interview for BusinessforHome.org about this, read it HERE.

Total Life Changes Lawsuits?

It is always prudent to check a company out before you get involved with them and checking for any lawsuits can give you an insight into how the company really operates.

MLM’s go together with Lawsuits all too frequently, I am afraid and Total Life Changes is no different.

We found a lawsuit from 2015 where the Environmental Research Centre filed a lawsuit against Total Life Changes for having lead in some of their products and within the manufacturing process.

Is Total Life Changes a Pyramid Scheme

Many MLM’s get incorrectly labelled as a Pyramid scheme, but they don’t do a lot to make it clearer that they aren’t close to one.

Just to be clear, Pyramid Schemes are illegal.  So Total Life Changes is not a true Pyramid Scheme as they have products that you can sell.  You do not need to recruit a team to make money with TLC.

But when you refer to the recruiting side, they are close to one.  To understand what I mean, take a look at the image below:

pyramid-scheme

This is what part of their commissions structure looks, the part that rewards recruiting.

An illegal pyramid scheme would look like this but not have any retail products for you to sell, the only thing to buy is the membership into the scheme.

Total Life Changes has products so avoids being one, but as the only way to earn the kind of money they claim you can from an MLM, you need to get on top of the pyramid in any MLM.

Recruiting an effective sales and recruitment team is the only way you can make any success within MLM.  But there are a few other things to consider that could get in the way of that too…

Success is Rare at Total Life Changes

The success rate at MLM’s is shocking.  98% of people lose money rather than make any money.  This is true for all MLM’s and it also includes Total Life Changes.

MLM’s have a legal obligation to show you an income disclosure to show you what their distributors actually earn.

However, Total Life Changes does not have one.  All, it has is an income disclaimer.  What are they trying to hide?

If we go by what we know from all the other MLM’s we have reviewed, we can say that the pyramid structure we showed you earlier is accurate for those MLM’s.  The top 2% are earning big money and they have probably been involved in the MLM for many years and have a huge number of distributors under them.  But the newbie who comes onboard thinking they can make it struggles to even cover off the monthly autoship that you will be expected to buy every month.

We are not trying to put you off, but just trying to show you that MLM’s are a tough way to make money, especially for those that lack any sales or recruitment experience.  Yet, the sales page makes it look extremely easy.

MLM’s require a unique skill set, especially as many of them have not caught onto to modern online marketing routes – still expecting you to do direct selling…

Total Life Changes Product Line

The total life changes product line has a number of different categories, including:

  • Weight Management
  • Full Body Nutrition
  • Energy & Fitness
  • Hair & Skin Care
  • Relaxation & Relief
  • Women’s Health

The most popular product range is their selections of tea, including their flagship product called Iaso Tea.

is total life changes a scam - iaso tea

Iaso Tea is a detox, weight-loss tea.  It contains 9 essential herbs which they claim will improve your overall health, plus the following benefits:

  • Detoxifying the organs
  • Relieving indigestion
  • Increasing weight loss
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Improving your skin

The only drawback is the cost, it comes in a 5-day package and will cost you $49.99.   In which, you get only 10 servings.

They claim that this tea will help you lose weight in just 5 days, however the company does not provide any clinical studies to back these claims up.

Total Life Change Products Are Expensive

Let’s look at this from the business opportunity point of view.  To make money with Total Life Changes you are going to need to sell these products to others.

However, there is a lot of competition in the health and wellness sector.  MLM prices are also extremely difficult and they lack clinical proof they work.

Take the weight loss tea for example.  There are loads of weight loss tea on the market, and none of them are anything special.  But a 5-day supply for $50 is extremely expensive and who is going to buy a bar of soap from you for $12…

We are from the UK and my wife has tried a BooTea from Holland & Barratt.  It is a high street health shop and it has 28 days’ worth of tea and cost £37.99.  At today’s exchange rate, that is $46.86.

Now, Gem has seen benefits from this tea but the difference is that it is a month’s supply and yet you will be selling a competing product that costs more and you would need to buy 6 to get the same amount.

6 x 5-day Iaso Tea = $299.94

1 x BooTea from Holland and Barrett = $46.86

This is just one of the difficulties you will find associated with MLM and Total Life Changes.

Haven't Made Your First $1 Yet?

Studies have shown that more than 70% of the people who want to make money online have not made their first dollar yet. So, you’re not alone!

How To Make Money with Total Life Changes?

As Total Life Changes is an MLM and that means that you can make money from one of two ways:

  • Retail Commissions – Selling the products to consumers
  • Recruitment Commissions – Recruit your team (downline) and earn commissions from their sales, etc.

People will always tell you that the money in MLM is in building your downline, but when there is too much focus from a company on this, it often leads to the company being labelled as a Pyramid scheme.  Let’s look into that now…

Getting Started with Total Life Changes

To get started, you will need to pay a joining fee, which they call their “Business Starter Kit”.

This will cost you a one-off $39.95 fee, but in order to remain active and therefore eligible for commissions, you need to sign up for a $40 monthly autoship.

Basically, you will pay for and receive products yourself each month.  This will qualify you for any commissions.

To increase your commission rate, you can also purchase one of TLC’s leadership packs:

  1. Leadership Pack 1 – $199 (an additional 5% on commissions for 2 months)
  2. Leadership Pack 2 – $499 (an additional 5% on commissions for 4 months)
  3. Leadership Pack 3 – $999 (an additional 5% on commissions for 6 months)

This is known as pay to play, meaning the more you spend, the more they pay.  This is not how it should work.  They should reward you for your hard work and not how much you pay.

Another thing is, whilst these leadership packs are optional, note that the person trying to recruit you in will earn commission from these sales so they will try and entice you into believing that you need to highest one if you want success…

The reason is that you could end up in a lot of debt if you go for something that you clearly cannot afford thinking it will work, when the numbers show that this will not!

P.S. This program enabled us to Create a 4-Figure Monthly Passive Income Stream.  It’s Free to get started and costs only $49/month to go full-time!

Total Life Changes Compensation Plan

MLM’s love to have overcomplicated compensation plans that require a maths degree to understand…  If you wanted to read the 15 page compensation plan in full for Total Life Changes, then click here.

You can also watch a video about their compensation plan below:

Instead of boring you with endless details, we are going to go over the more important aspects of their compensation plan.

Commission Qualification

To earn commissions, you first have to qualify and then stay qualified and this is where your $40 per month autoship comes in.

This is often how MLM’s make most of their money, by having thousands of distributors all required to buy products every month they make consistent sales.  Now, $40 a month might not sound a lot but if you are not making any money from this business opportunity, that money can soon stack up.

Either way, Total Life Changes will make money whilst their distributors will be losing money.

Retail Commissions

The first way to make money with Total Life Changes is through selling the products direct to retail customers.  You will receive 50% retail commissions at TLC.

Fast Start Bonus

Whenever you recruit someone into joining the company and they place their first order (must be at least $40) you will earn 50% of the first order placed by personally recruited affiliates.

Residual Binary Commissions

Depending on your success, this is where most of your money will be made and is the part that rewards the sales of your recruited downline.

They follow a binary commission structure, which looks like this:

mlm-binary-structure

Here’s how much you can earn depending on the GV or Group Volume of your downline’s sales:

  • Recruit 2 Affiliates (this is mandatory to qualify) – 10%
  • Generate 1000 GV in the pay leg – 12%
  • Generate 5000 GV in the pay leg – 14%
  • Generate 10,000 GV in the pay leg – 17%
  • Generate 20,000 GV in the pay leg – 20%

Other Bonuses

They also have a number of other bonuses including a corporate bonus and car bonus.  But you need to be earning some serious money before these will come into play.

What We Liked About Total Life Changes

Here is what we liked about Total Life Changes:

#1 Long Established Company

It takes something for an MLM to still be around after ten years, some only last a couple of years.  The health and wellness sector is heavily saturated, but as they have achieved $88 billion-dollar sales and are still around, it does show they are not going anywhere anytime soon.

#2 Products Seem to Work

Their products, particularly their weight loss tea is pretty popular and receives good reviews.

What We Didn't Like About Total Life Changes

Here is what we didn’t like about Total Life Changes:

#1 No Income Disclosure

This is the main reason why it is difficult to actually see if this is a good opportunity or not, even for an experienced Network Marketer.  As, we have no idea on how much their current distributors are earning.  Yes, the company is making a lot of money, but when distributors are tied into a monthly autoship, it is hard to actually see where the money is coming from.  Is it from retail commissions or from their distributors?  Our experience tells us it is from their distributors…

#2 Expensive Products

You are going to need to sell these products, but we have already showed you how expensive these products can be and how are you going to compete against all the other competitors out there.  Especially as TLC Iaso Tea is available on Amazon for a lot less than you will be charging???

Iaso-Tea-Amazon-Listings

Plus, a bar of soap for $12, how any of them are you going to be able to sell?

#3 Mixed Product Reviews

Whilst their tea seems to get some good reviews, the remaining product line gets a mixed review scoring only 3 out of 5 on the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Total Life Changes BBB rating

There are also reports of the products having adverse effects on people and no success:

These were quite recent too…

#5 Low Success Rate

MLM’s cannot get away from the fact that the success rate for those at the lower levels of the compensation plan are not making money, they are in fact losing money.  Studies show that on average, 73% of people that join an MLM lose their money!  Or end up in huge debt.

Without an income disclosure, we cannot really tell you whether TLC is any better than that or not.  But I highly doubt you will find success here.

#6 Autoship

Selling these products will be difficult enough in a heavily crowded market and cheaper alternatives being available online.  To then add on that you will be expected to buy products every month as part of the autoship, disguised as the only way to remain qualified for commissions is criminal (in our view).  These costs will soon stack up, and if you are not making any money from sales, you will soon end up in debt.

#7 Pay to Play

We don’t like “pay to play” systems, you should be rewarded for your effort levels and not the fact you pay more.  Add to that the fact that you could spend $999 on the top one as it has the highest commission rate, and yet there is no guarantee you will sell anything or make anything.

#8 Hurts Relationships

One of the worst parts of any MLM is that they do not really help newbies build up a proper list of clients to target.  We have seen some promise to help you build up a list of 100 people to target.

But this are your friends, family, work colleagues or neighbours.  As you will be under pressure to make sales you will feel the need to pressure your friends into making purchases.  But this will not end up being a good long-term strategy and is often the reason why MLM has a bad effect on your relationships.

They may make an initial purchase to help you out, but this will not end up being a sustainable thing.  You need to know how to target the right customers with the right products and MLM’s do not help you effectively with training on this.  Selling to friends and family can get really awkward really fast and is often the main reason why people quit MLM.

If MLM actually taught people how to utilise online marketing to sell online, people may have more success.  But direct selling is not ideal for an introvert who isn’t great at meeting new people – which integral to MLM sales.

Haven't Made Your First $1 Yet?

Studies have shown that more than 70% of the people who want to make money online have not made their first dollar yet. So, you’re not alone!

Can You Make Money with Total Life Changes?

If you are outgoing person who has experience with sales and recruiting, then you may find this MLM is the right one for you.  But it is going to be a tough job to climb up the pyramid to get towards the top to make the kind of money they claim is possible.

If I think about it from a beginners point of view though, I do not think MLM is the right business opportunity for you.  Selling over-priced health and wellness products in a heavily saturates market with a company that does not provide an income disclosure tells me that this will make the company more money but leave you in debt without being any closer to make money.

If you can get in with the right team that will train you, you may have a chance.  But, if it is a friend who is trying to introduce you, then they just be desperate to earn some commission that will benefit them in the short term.  But leave you both needing to chase sales and not bring you long term success.

When people can buy stuff online so easily these days, I wonder how long people are going to keep buying these expensive MLM products, when there are better and cheaper alternatives elsewhere.

Is Total Life Changes a Scam?

No, we don’t believe Total Life Changes is a scam.  It is a legitimate MLM company that sells reputable weight loss products. If they were a scam, they would have been investigated and closed by the authorities long before now.

But that doesn’t mean that we think it is a good business opportunity for someone to join.

So many people join an MLM with the belief that they can be making the money they dream of, when in fact it is one of the hardest business models there is out there.

You need to be able to jump straight into being able to sell and recruit a team from the moment you hand over your money.  There is no room to dawdle with this.

That is 98% of people fail and 73% of people who join an MLM lose their money!

For this reason alone, I would suggest you stay away from this MLM business opportunity. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t make money online, we are just suggesting there is a better opportunity.  Read to the bottom to learn more.

My Total Life Changes Review - Final Conclusion

We do not believe Total Life Changes is a worth joining.  The lack of an income disclosure statement, plus the expensive products makes this a tough route for anyone just starting out.

That doesn’t mean that is the end of the road for you though, there are still plenty of ways to make money from home or online.  Read on to learn how we got started with a beginner-friendly business model and are now earning a 4-Figure Passive Monthly Income from it (after getting started for FREE).

How We Make Money Online

I’m not a fan of MLM, not because it’s illegal or not profitable, but because of all the restrictions and expensive costs involved.

Instead, Affiliate Marketing is our top recommended business model for anyone looking to make money online

The reasons are simple…

  • You can promote anything you want and aren’t restricted to only promote products from one MLM company
  • You don’t have to recruit anyone to make money
  • You never need to sell to your friends and family
  • It’s free to get started

In fact, with affiliate marketing we’ve been able to Create a 4-Figure Monthly Passive Income Stream.  If you want to learn more, click here.

  1. John, as someone with an extensive direct sales and network marketing background, I can say that you have done a phenomenal job on providing this review for your readers. It is unfortunate, downright sad honestly, to see the number of companies out there running scams such as these. Not only are the visions of grandeur, with little to no work required, downright dishonest, but the products leave much to be desired. Job well done. Keep up the great work.

    • Hey Jason,

thanks for checking out our review.  You will know that direct selling is hard when you lack the sales experience, but many of these programs make it sound like anyone can do it.  They would do much better if they were honest and gave their new distributors time to get going rather than expecting a high start up fee straightaway.

I am not saying people cannot succeed with MLM, it just seems much harder than affiliate marketing.

      thanks

  2. Nice in depth review! Anytime I have dealt with MLM, it never proves to be valuable to the people at the bottom. Even if you manage to work your way up, not knowing payouts would be an instant turn off. It is amazing to me they have stayed in business this long but people will surprise you in what they will buy!

    • Hi Jordan,

I totally agree with you, but I think some people get in too deep and they want to try and make their money back rather than cut their losses.  But, in the end they ultimately end up in huge piles of debt and nowhere to go.

It is a shame and I think MLM’s could do much better with it, but they are making money so why change?

thanks for checking out our review
